Competitive sports have always been part of my life. Today, racing single and double sculls gives me purpose and pleasure in training. I enjoy racing at Master’s Nationals, FISA Worlds, the Head of the Charles and local regattas. As a young athlete, I swam competitively in college and high school. Competitions help me find new levels. This is why I have competed in all my recreational sports, including tennis, slalom skiing and CrossFit.
Like competing, coaching is a life long endeavor. Passing on the specific skill sets is crucial, but building character and resiliency is the key to success. I began coaching swimming as a teen. Coaching children of all ages to dive, swim, play tennis and row has been an extension of teaching. In addition to teaching basic skill sets in a sport, I have focused on helping athletes move away from apprehension and self doubt towards being self-assured and confident in their training. My athlete’s success comes from a combination of physical and mental conditioning as well as finding joy in the journey it takes to become an elite level athlete.
I teach the whole person. My goal in teaching has been to inspire a love of math and science through fun learning. My curriculum emphasizes active, cooperative learning: working together to build experiments, solve problems and think creatively. In the classroom, I have worked with all ages K-12, teaching math and science courses; however, learning happens beyond the classroom. This is why I have worked to build programs such as GEMS, Future Problem Solvers, and Science Olympiad - programs that get kids and their teachers excited to go one level further in math and science.
Working with motivated and talented athletes so they can achieve at the highest level is my passion. My background, experience, and success is grounded in understanding how we learn and what motivates us. When not rowing, racing, teaching, coaching, or attending clinics, I can be found practicing yoga, lifting barbells or attending local sporting events!
